Date: Wednesday, September-13, 2006
Time: 9:00 AM - 11:15 AM
Session: Division of Small Chemical Businesses | True Stories of Small Chemical Businesses
Location: San Francisco Marriott -- Pacific Room C, Oral

From the lab bench to the market, scientists will present new multidisciplinary research at the 232nd national meeting & exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS). The American Chemical Society is the world's largest scientific society dedicated to a single discipline, with more than 158,000 members. The society will hold its 232nd national meeting & exposition in San Francisco, CA, from September 10-14, 2006. More than 12,500 scientists are expected to attend this meeting, with approximately 7,000 papers to be presented.

Dr. Kai Lamottke, General Manager of Bicoll Biotechnology (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. is invited to present insights of the successful "Establishment of a Research & Development site in China".

In 2001 the Bicoll Group implemented one of the first international biopharmaceutical R&D locations in China. The set-up phase of its R&D unit for drug discovery in Shanghai was completed exceptionally fast after one year. In 2005, only four years after the initial set-up, Bicoll Biotechnology (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. already doubled the size of its R&D locations.
Kai Lamottke will join practical lessons learned at the build-up process of Bicoll's centre for biopharmaceutical research & development:
Bicoll's business model is based on a dual concept with technology development, cooperation management and marketing functions in Munich and facilities for research and development located in Shanghai. Based on in-depth experience the lecture gives a careful analysis of the weaknesses and strengths of both locations and shows the resulting functional structure.

Lecture Series "Innovation Management" - School of Business, University of Munich / Germany - "Radical Technological Change", a lecture held by Dr. Heinrich Arnold
Innotec - the Institute for Innovation Research, Technology Management, and Entrepreneurship at the School of Business, University of Munich, Germany invited Dr. Heinrich M. Arnold, head of business affairs at Bicoll, to give a lecture within the institute's lecture series for innovation management.

Heinrich Arnold gave an overview of different types of technological changes and described methods for their identification. The lecture monitored the current status of research on success factors how firms can overcome technological change.
Dr. Arnold also presented his own research on this subject that enhances and partially challenges classical teaching in the management of technology. Much of his research is available as a book "technology shocks" (www.technologyshocks.de) published recently by Springer in the Physica-Verlag series "Contributions to management science".

The observations apply to the biotechnology industry as well. The Biotech industry itself can be seen as the result of radical technological change that was brought about by genomics/ proteomics combined with high performance computing and process automation combined with miniaturization.

About Bicoll
The Bicoll group is an international biopharmaceutical enterprise with its head office in Munich, Germany, and a research and development site in Shanghai, P.R. China.
Bicoll's successful strategy for modern drug design is based on superior compounds for lead generation derived from plants.
Bicoll's advances in natural products technology enabled the company to overcome the classical drawbacks of natural product chemistry while at the same time exploiting the high potential of plants for drug development. The company's proprietary core technologies BIFRAC N and BIPRESELECT are specially engineered to accelerate the development process of new drug candidates based on plants. BIFRAC N is a high-resolution isolation and separation system to detect biologically active compounds. Through BIPRESELECT, the company can narrow in on pre-defined ADME criteria. Thus Bicoll is able to sort out compounds early, that have low probability of becoming drug candidates and which would otherwise block the drug development pipeline. Bicoll's technology shortens the time-consuming and expensive process of lead discovery and pre-clinical studies by around one third and reduces the failure rate in the drug development process.

Seminar "Innovative Processes in Biotechnology", Munich / Germany - "In-house versus In-licensing" - a lecture held by Dr. Heinrich Arnold
Dr. Heinrich M. Arnold, head of business affairs of Bicoll, was invited speaker at the two-day seminar "Innovative Processes in Biotechnology" organized by Innotec - the Institute for Innovation Research, Technology Management, and Entrepreneurship at the School of Business, University of Munich, Germany.
The current squeeze in pharma research creates a dramatic need for a lost-cost approach to rapidly marketable results. With his lecture, Dr. Arnold showed the participants how the pharmaceutical industry is currently changing its business strategy from in-house activities to in-licensing. For the majority of companies, this results in much faster positive cash flows from drug development. Against the setting of these facts, biotechnology enterprises will more and more get invited to cooperate with the pharmaceutical industry.
Dr. Arnold gave an overview of Bicoll's modern approach to innovative drug development - drug discovery based on natural products and how it can overcome the current hurdles in modern drug development.

Round-table discussion of decision makers in development policy and foreign trade - Shanghai, P.R. China
Decision makers of German non-profit organisations doing business in China were invited by the German Consulate in Shanghai to participate in a round-table discussion for development policy and its main focus in the up-coming two years. The event took place in Shanghai, P.R. China and followed the annual meeting of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development and the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (MOFTEC) held in Beijing. Bicoll was invited as the only private enterprise and represented through Dr. Christian Haug, managing director of Bicoll GmbH, because of its biodiversity conservation projects. In several open discussions Dr. Haug shared insides and aspects of the built-up process in the P.R. China with participants from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the German consulate general in Shanghai, the German embassy in Beijing, the German Development Cooperation (GTZ) and several other organisations involved in economic cooperation and development.
In this context, Dr Haug emphasized the necessity to develop business models that link economic gain and the protection of biodiversity. Bicoll is one of the few examples where a company operates on the principles and guidelines of the 1992 Rio Convention and the 2002 Bonn Guidelines on the protection of biodiversity.
