Bicoll announces the signing of a new partnership with Genfit and the partial financing of a 3.2 million euro joint EuroTrans-Bio project by ERA-Net/ European Commission
Munich, Germany - July 3rd, 2007 - The Bicoll GmbH, a biopharmaceutical company specializing in high-tech natural product chemistry to identify novel small molecules for drug discovery and related innovative fields, today announces the signing of a collaboration agreement with Genfit SA (ALGFT) (Lille, France), a biopharmaceutical company committed to drug discovery and development in the field of cardiovascular, inflammatory and metabolic disease.

Bicoll and Genfit will combine their strength in biopharmaceutical drug discovery and development to search for novel ligands binding to a well-characterized class of nuclear receptors that are relevant targets for diseases with an inflammatory component. These orphan nuclear receptors share structural features of classical steroid receptors but by definition lack identified natural or synthetic ligands.

The joint research project "OLNORME: Occurrence of novel Ligands for a Nuclear Orphan Receptor in plant Metabolites" will be based on the screening of the highly diversified library of plant metabolites established by the Bicoll Group. Bicoll will provide Genfit with a defined number of ProfilesTM. These property-sorted fractions are generated from plant extracts with Bicoll's robust, innovative separation system with a proprietary separation phase.

Bicoll further announces that the joint research proposal was selected for a partly and risk sharing support of the overall cost of 3.2 million Euro. Part of the funding is done by the EuroTrans-Bio/ERA-Net call for transnational research projects in the fields of health, agro/food and environment. Further partners for the research project are the University of Lille 2 (R&D department), France, and the University of Freiburg (R&D department), Germany.

"We are pleased to disclose the facts about the OLNORME project today, after the final agreement of our local national funding organization," commented Kai Lamottke, Managing Director of Bicoll.

"Small molecules from plants have long been of interest for their reliable ability to produce compounds with distinct biological or pharmacological properties. More than 50% of drugs on the market today are based on natural compounds as the active principle. This risk-sharing grant from the EU and German Government enables us further to demonstrate the successful integration of natural products screening via ProfilesTM in this distinguished disease area. The partner's assay will screen an estimated number of more than +100.000 natural compounds to deliver drug candidates for further development.

About the EuroTrans-Bio/ ERA-Net initiative
The EuroTrans-Bio initiative's goal is to support trans-national R&D private/private and private/public co-operations between companies, especially SMEs, and academic labs by coordinating their national or regional public funding programs. The Bicoll Group successfully completes a Public Private Partnership (PPP) project with the Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH (DEG)
December 12th, 2003, Munich – The Bicoll GmbH, announced today that it has successfully completed a Public Private Partnership (PPP) project in the field of environmental protection in China. Bicoll carried out this extensive and ambitious project together with its public partner Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH (DEG) in coordination function for the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The costs of this roughly 500 000 € project were shared 55/45 between Bicoll and the BMZ (resp. DEG).

Most of the Chinese rich floral biodiversity is increasingly threatened by human activities. The direct, non-regulated collection of herbs and plants for Traditional Chinese Medicine is only one of the facts that endanger rare species.
With DEG's commitment to carry 45% of the total costs, Bicoll could start a unique educational program to demonstrate the economic value of preservation to local people making them more sensitive to the necessity of protecting biodiversity.

"Bicoll elaborated a completely new business model to prove that innovative and modern research and development of novel, western-standard pharmaceuticals and the conservation of biodiversity can go hand in hand" explained Dr. Christian Haug, chairman of board of directors of Bicoll Biotechnology (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. "Though the starting materials for Bicoll's innovative drug development process are generated from endemic Asian plants, the protection of biodiversity is guaranteed through Bicoll's highly efficient use of resources. The collection of larger amounts of plants is not attempted for further drug development as only a hand full of the rare natural sources is necessary for Bicoll's lead structure library and screening systems."

With DEG's help, Bicoll was able to establish one of the most modern research laboratories for drug development in China. As all value-added services of Bicoll's drug development process are carried out in China, the company not only guarantees a sustainable financial flow to local communities but also provides Western technology and transfers know-how into a developing country.
"We appreciate DEG's confidence and esteem of our project" expressed Dr. Christian Haug his thanks to Claudia Wink and Renate Katenkamp (DEG) who presented to him a golden badge for the successful conclusion of Bicoll's PPP project.

100 000 Euro support from Bavarian ministry for Bicolls innovative concept in drug discovery
Soon, patients who thought that they suffer from diseases with no cure available can expect effective treatment. This was one of the motivation, for the Bavarian ministry for science, research and arts to support two of the founders of the biotechnology company Bicoll (Munich, Germany) with a 100 000 Euro fund (Fluegge – program) for transforming promising academic invention into successful business. Through this Bavarian grant two of the founders of Bicoll, Kai Lamottke, Ph.D. (Technical University Munich) and Jun Xie, Ph.D. (University of Munich), can also use the unique facilities located at their home universities to apply it at their ongoing research at Bicoll.
Today, drug development companies cannot satisfy the continuous growth in demand of new, high-quality active molecules addressing newly found drug targets. Bicoll solves this bottleneck requirement: building on the selective forces of evolution in nature. Their invention of an innovative, flexible and fast concept will be able to speed up modern drug discovery, selecting highly qualified small molecules for further development.
